Decharging-An Essential Ancient Practice for Every Modern Day Yogi (Teacher, Healer and Parent) by Kimberly Naujock-Hargrove

If there was one practice I wish all teachers, students, energy healers, and parents knew and incorporated into their lives, it’s how to properly decharge.  This simple, beautiful process restores calm, relieves stress, and brings balance to your energy system in a way that cannot be done otherwise. The ancient practice of decharging, recently being rediscovered by modern science, uses the elements of nature (earth, fire, sky, water, and air) to protect your energy system and improve your well-being.  It’s an essential technique to support your overall health and compliments a regular yoga and exercise practice because of how it works through the elements to renew our energy. Our bodies are made of up of the five elements of nature, which is why it is necessary to use one of the five elements of nature to remove the stresses and negativity that are a part of everyday life.  Without decharging regularly, stress builds in our energy system, making us more prone to frustration, illness, burn-out, and imbalance of all kinds.

Decharging is especially important for teachers, energy healers, care givers, and anyone working with people, because of the inner mechanism that happens without our notice while we are helping and in healing interactions with others. Over time they start to face issues in their lives, because they are continually giving help and do not know how to effectively decharge the energies and karmas that are exchanged in a healing process. This is especially important for anyone who is naturally open-hearted and compassionate, whether or not they are regularly interacting with others. For those on a spiritual journey and/or practicing meditation and yoga, decharging regularly is an essential piece of a successful and complete meditation process. My teacher, the East Indian saint Sri Kaleshwar who brought this technology from the palm leaf manuscripts of India to the West, explained it simply that, “Charging (your soul capacity) is essential. Decharging is more essential.”

To get started, one decharging technique you can begin today is working with the earth element.  Find a black stone of any size. It can be one you found you in nature or bought. Place your thumb on the stone and while holding it in your hand, set your intention to decharge all of the stress and negativity you are carrying in your body to the earth element through the black rock. You may repeat this intention to yourself or sit quietly, feeling the magnetism of the earth element and how your body becomes lighter, and your energy softer.  Work with this process for 10 minutes at a time to start. A black rock is something you carry around with you to use at home, in your car, between visits or errands, or at the end of your day—decharge to your black stone any time you have have been working with others, feel anxious, tired, and unwanted energy. You’ll know you’ve finished decharging when you feel a lift in any irritable or heavy energies and feel lighter and ready to return to your activities with more presence and peace. Taking time to decharge every day is one of the most important practices you can do to create lasting change in your life and health.
